2019 Academic Symposium
Stayer 205
Steven Avery was convicted for a sexual assault he didn’t commit in 1985 and sentenced to 18 years in prison. He was released in 2003 and arrested in 2005 for an unrelated murder. Throughout his experiences with the criminal justice system there have been competing narratives about his acts and character. This session will examine his two criminal cases and how public opinion was framed by the police, prosecutors, and media.
