Coming Soon: Northern Skies by Elizabeth Tornes

Elizabeth Tornes earned a Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the University of Utah. She has published three poetry collections, Between the Dog and the Wolf, New Moon, and Snowbound. Her published poems have won several awards and Pushcart Prize nominations. She has also published a collection of Ojibwe oral histories, Memories of Lac du Flambeau Elders. Lac du Flambeau, in northern Wisconsin and home of the Lac de Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, has become her adoptive community for the past 25 years, where she continues to learn about Ojibwe language and traditional lifeways.

About The Muriel Press

The Muriel Press is an embedded micro-press at Marian University, where students gain hands-on skills in editing, book design, marketing & public relations through an internship-in-the-classroom. Through a multi-course sequence delivered through the English, Art, and Communication programs, students take books from submission to finished project, working with the author to design a social media launch and the book’s release.

In its naming, the press honors Sr. Muriel Tarr who taught art, music, and English, and was a poet & translator. In keeping with the mission of Marian University, the Muriel Press will publish works of contemporary literature from Upper Midwestern authors with a social justice focus.

Code of Ethics

To adhere as closely as possible to best practices and Council of Literary Magazines and Press’s (CLMP) code of ethics, The Muriel Press will read submissions blind, and exclude close friends, relatives, students, and former students of current Marian University faculty.

Michele Merens is a writer and playwright with publishing credits in more than a dozen literary magazines and anthologies including Third Wednesday, Lilith, Plum Hamptons, Poetica, and Inkwell. She is a Puffin Grant winner for her play The Lion’s Den, a DVD copy of its Milwaukee premiere now archived in the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Madison; a Barnard College Senior Scholar in Creative Writing; and a member of the Dramatist’s Guild. She holds a MSJ from Northwestern University and a BA from Barnard College.
