Marian faculty, staff earn recognition awards; Noble receives James R. Underkofler Award


FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University recognized several faculty and staff members for their work and dedication to the local community at the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Ceremony.

Lisa McArthur, academic advisor in the School of Business and Public Safety, was awarded the Academic Advising Excellence Award. This award identifies positive role models for Marian students and acknowledges the importance the role academic advising plays in the University's mission and core values and in students' success.

Gigi Burnett, department secretary for the Center for Academic Support & Excellence office, received the Staff of the Year award. The Staff of the Year award is given to an individual who makes exceptional contributions to the Marian University community in the areas of inspirational focus, community and service, innovation and proactive leadership and learning.

Dr. John Morris, associate professor of chemistry, was awarded the Service Learning Award. The Service Learning Award is given to an individual in recognition of activities in strengthening communities and enriching lives through service-learning. Morris is an active participant in the First-Year Studies Service-Learning Immersion program, serves on the Service-Learning committee and is known for incorporating hands-on learning experiences in prairie restoration methods.

Sr. Marie Scott, CSA, received the Social Justice Award, which is given to individuals in recognition of activities that challenge structures that are inequitable, oppressive, wasteful, or violent, or in promoting viable, just structures. Scott serves as Marian's campus minister, is a member of the Social Justice Committee at Marian and serves as a contact and organizer for the Fond du Lac Loaves and Fishes program and Marian's alternative spring break mission trips.

Marian University recognized Nancy Noble, associate professor of nursing, with the James R. Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. The Underkoffler criteria require that candidates "reflect the college's mission, purpose and commitment to provide the very best undergraduate education."

The Underkofler award was established through an endowment fund created to honor Mr. James R. Underkofler by the Wisconsin Power and Light Foundation, and is administered by the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Marian is one of five Wisconsin independent colleges eligible for the award.
