Marian Nursing Student Wins Activism Award

April 9, 2012

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Nursing and Spanish major Nicole Saleske was awarded the Student Activism Award from the Wisconsin Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies on March 30 at Marquette University.

Saleske, a junior, has completed four service trips to Nicaragua since 2010, including one that she organized and led. In addition to teaching skills such as making bio-gas stoves, working on water distribution projects and programs for children and volunteering in health clinics, she has been a part of Witness for Peace delegations to Nicaragua and Colombia.

“We are very proud of Nicole,” said Dr. Julie Luetschwager, Dean of the School of Nursing. “She reflects the breadth and strength of the new generation of nurses being educated to enter practice.”

Set to graduate in May 2013, Saleske’s goals include opening a hospital similar to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the third world and spreading awareness about issues of human rights, health and free trade.

“I was very humbled at receiving this award,” Saleske says. “Although on paper it looks like I have done a lot, with each trip I realize more and more how much I have yet to do, how much awareness I need to raise about certain issues. This award lets me look at myself in the mirror and be proud of what little I have done and motivates me to do more for the future.”
